An extraordinary group exhibition celebrating ten years of Turner Galleries Art Angels residencies, featuring new work from important and highly collectable Australian artists.
This exhibition celebrates ten years of the Art Angels sponsored residencies in Perth. To mark the occasion we are offering each 2013 Art Angel membership a free artwork of their choice from our archives of editioned artworks created by previous artists in residence. In addition, each membership will also receive a commemorative plate, designed by local artist Andrew Nicholls, and two more limited edition artworks from this year’s artists in residence: Cathy Blanchflower and Sophia Szilagyi.
Since 2002 some remarkable Australian artists have come to Perth, lived, worked and exhibited their art with the financial aid of the Art Angels. We are very proud to announce that every artist sponsored by the Art Angels to come to Perth and participate in the Turner Galleries Artist in Residence Programme has agreed to take part in this exciting group exhibition. The 33 artists include:
Annette Bezor, Marion Borgelt, Conrad Botes, William Breen, Eugene Carchesio, Debra Dawes, Marian Drew, Stephen Eastaugh, Dongwang Fan, Nicholas Folland, Belinda Fox, Helen Geier, Julie Gough, Charmaine Hardy, Cherry Hood, Mark Kimber, Bronek Kozka, Carlier Makigawa, Alasdair Mcluckie, Simon Obarzanek, Debrah Paauwe, Louise Paramor, Rosslynd Piggott, Tobias Richardson, Lisa Roet, Darren Siwes, Gemma Smith, Martin Smith, Simon Strong, Valerie Sparks, Angela Valamanesh, Hossein Valamanesh and Guan Wei.
All of these artists have artworks in major public, private and corporate collections.
The Turner Galleries Art Angels Incorporated was formed in late 2001 as a philanthropic group to support the visual arts in Perth and the Turner Galleries Artist in Residence Programme. The Art Angels fund the return airfare, accommodation, freight costs for the artist, and provide a generous stipend. In return the artist creates a set of limited edition artworks for the Art Angels members.
Since 2007 the Turner Galleries artists in residence have been utilising the Central Institute of Technology’s accommodation and studio facilities, located in the heart of Northbridge, just a short walk from the gallery. This enables student access to the artist, and the artist access to great facilities and an enormous studio.
The Turner Galleries Artist in Residence Programme and the Art Angels continue to thrive, with Bronek Kozka, Debra Dawes and Alasdair McLuckie exhibiting in 2012. Cathy Blanchflower and Sophia Szilagyi participating in 2013 and an exciting line up for 2014 will be announced later in the year.
Over $485,000 has been contributed to the residency fund by the Turner Galleries Art Angels since 2002. This money also helps local artists and their galleries, with 40% of these funds being used to acquire outstanding artworks that are then raffled back to lucky Art Angels at the end of each year.
The Art Angels wish to acknowledge the enormous contribution these artists have made to the cultural life of Perth during these ten years, and to use the exhibition to promote the Art Angels and their philanthropic goals. Memberships are now being accepted for 2013.
