Turner Galleries is very pleased to present a photographic exhibition by Martin Smith.
Martin is our second artist in residence for 2011, and he has travelled from Brisbane to spend four weeks in Perth, staying at the Central Institute of Technology’s accommodation and studio.
Martin Smith is one of Australia’s most rapidly emerging, and promising, photo-media artists. He has become well known for his stories and appropriated song lyrics cut from the surface of photographs. He selects these photographs from his back catalogue for their everyday nature; images of streetscapes, landscapes, carparks, gardens... In other words, the images themselves are not contrived or overly special, but they are beautifully composed, taken from his everyday travels, from his daily routines. The text, whether from his own reminiscing or song lyrics, is imbued with memories and melancholy. He has tried to capture the small events and memories that mould us into adults. When combined a new narrative is formed, with the viewer attempting to connect the image with the text. In doing so they bring their own memories and experiences to the work, perhaps identifying with the artist, or remembering similar events or places.
This exhibition will consist of a variety of works spanning the last three years, including a new series being shown for the very first time. This new series, titled Revelation, feature his three young children and Martin’s perceived possible failure of his own fatherhood. Like his earlier works, they are humorous and poignant. Unlike his earlier works, they are two dimensional, with the text an integral part of the photograph rather than being cut from its surface.
Examples of Martin’s photographs can be found in the collections of the Queensland Art Gallery, University of Queensland Art Museum, Monash City Gallery, Artbank and the recently opened Museum of Old and New Art in Tasmania. He has exhibited across Australia and internationally.
Martin Smith’s residency is proudly sponsored by the Turner Galleries Art Angels and the Central Institute of Technology.
