nicholas folland

25 june - 24 july 2010

Turner Galleries' current artist in residence is one of Australia’s most exciting young artists: Nicholas Folland.

His work has been exhibited to increasing national acclaim in major public institutions and leading commercial galleries. Collections such as the National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of SA, Museum of Contemporary Art, Artbank, Samstag Collection and various university collections now hold his work. Nicholas graduated from the University of Sydney in 1999 with a swag of awards under his belt. He was chosen for the Samstag International Arts Scholarship and was selected for the Hatched National Graduate Exhibition in 1999, he won the Tertiary Art Prize from the University of South Australia in 1998, the National Universities Object Award and the Geoff Lloyd Memorial Prize in 1997. He went on to earn the University Postgraduate Award & CHSS Supplementary Award from the University of Sydney in 2003.

Nicholas is based in South Australia, where he exhibits with the renowned Greenaway Gallery. He also shows with Ryan Renshaw Gallery in Brisbane and Karen Woodbury Gallery in Melbourne. Recent highlights for Nicholas include completing his Masters in Visual Arts from the University of Sydney last year. In 2004 he achieved national recognition with his inclusion in Australian Culture Now at the National Gallery of Victoria.

Turner Galleries is very pleased to be facilitating Nicholas Folland’s first solo exhibition in Perth. He will be participating in the Turner Galleries Artist in Residence Programme, proudly sponsored by the Turner Galleries Art Angels and the Central Institute of Technology.

His exhibition will be an overview of his last nine years of work, and will include several new artworks never before exhibited. Nicholas’ work has an aesthetic chaotic beauty, it’s playful, sometimes whimsical, and often humorous. He works with materials as diverse as crystal and granite, and incorporates domestic objects into dramatic new creations, such as chandeliers that grow ice, glassware that forms an icy floe, a bathroom that continuously overflows, and a cloud formed from multiple chandeliers. Nature and the romantic landscape make regular appearances in his work, but always with a twist, or a fractured unease.

Speechless, an iridescent installation of trophies from 2007, celebrates the mediocre in life. Adorned with plaques for ‘worst’, ‘least improved’, ‘overall failure’ and ‘always last’ this trophy shop of failure commemorates all those moments in life when we were definitely not the best we could be. Nicholas’ dry wit continues with an installation of three large granite boulders, titled Mt Hopeless, that are actually warm to touch, due to their hot-rod heating system. Nicholas transforms the everyday into uncertain new treasures.
