silence

1-30 september 2017

Kyle Hughes-Odgers has rapidly gained national respect for his street art, exhibitions and children's books.

In the last fifteen years he has progressed from minor street art projects to painting the exterior of a massive building at the Perth International Airport and winning the 2013 SCBWI Crystal Kite Award for Australia and New Zealand for his children's book Ten Tiny Things with author Meg McKinlay. He is currently painting the four 35 metre grain silos at Merredin, another massive undertaking, (commissioned by FORM partnering with CBH Group, Western Power and Lotterywest), that will form part of the new PUBLIC silo trail.

International invitations have poured in for Hughes-Odgers to participate in public art projects and residencies in New York City, Washington DC, Los Angeles, London, Sheffield, Hong Kong, Singapore, Madrid, Berlin, Cambodia and Iceland.

His professional exhibition history and reputation have likewise skyrocketed, with major local collections and astute collectors purchasing and commissioning artworks. Silence will be Kyle Hughes-Odgers fourth solo exhibition with Turner Galleries since the first very successful show with us in 2010, You just have your eyes closed. A large part of the appeal of Hughes-Odgers' art is the recognisable figures that populate his walls and canvases. They represent our yearnings for a better life, for love, for understanding, for caring for the environment, and surviving the machine age. They are everyday people with problems to solve, failures to live with and memories to treasure.

Coupled with these narratives are multifaceted geometric patterns, adding a layer of abstraction to his work. Hughes-Odgers noted that, "For this body of work I wanted to create complex narratives (based on the concept of order and chaos) that combine ideas of nature, the built environment, human behaviour and abstraction." The title of the exhibition, Silence, "is based on the idea of paintings as static silent objects that can spark ideas, memory and create dialogue... Painting is the opposite of modern life, it is time consuming to make, not mass produced, and needs patience to observe."
(Artist statement July 2017).

This exhibition started to take shape in the multi-panel works Diagrams of life, consisting of 156 individual 10 x 10cm artworks. Hughes-Odgers has combined these individual panels to create 13 artworks of 12 panels each. This technique has allowed him to connect these single ideas into a larger narrative within each final work – making an even larger and more complex story when all are viewed together.

Silence is made up of works on canvas, works on wood and ink drawings on paper as well as a mini-documentary film by Chad Peacock showcasing Kyle Hughes-Odgers projects from the past 12 years. The film will be first shown at the exhibition then put online, on Hughes-Odgers' website, after the exhibition is complete.
