Classical themes and surreal motifs abound in John Cullinane's exhibition of new paintings.
Along with his art historical references he also draws on his own life encounters in his figurative artworks. He stated, "An idea will come from any source such as something or someone seen; such as an event, a book, a discussion, politics, any media whatever. I like to be open at all times to capture the idea when it comes, many ideas escape, never to be found. This exhibition draws from a variety of ideas, where I look for a sense of the mysterious and the uncanny, relationships that are not what they seem, where there is always an unknown."
John has also started experimenting with new colour palettes, sourced from cutting up magazines and junk mail to form colour combinations that he would not normally work with.
John's paintings can be found in many important local and interstate public collections including the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of WA, Parliament House Canberra, Murdoch University, Curtin University, Bankwest, Edith Cowan University, Royal Perth Hospital and several local council collections.
