Wildflower painting has a strong tradition in Australia and Western Australia is particularly blessed for the abundance and variety of its native flora.
Early settlement coincided with the rising interest in the scientific natural world, and it became a popular pastime for the gentrified to collect specimens and to paint and record the wildflowers of their new home alongside the introduced species in their new gardens. Philip Ward-Dickson continues the fascination that people have had for the unique beauty of Australian wildflowers. He aspires to reinterpret them into emblematic images, flag-like representations of silhouettes.
Wild Flower State is a collection of paintings, of quiet observations, that celebrates not only the beauty of what is, but also reflects on what has been lost. With ruthless clearing and development continuing across our state we may face a future that only possesses artists’ depictions of the wildflowers that we once had in such profusion.
Philip Ward-Dickson is an important mid-career artist from Perth. His paintings can be found in the collections of the Art Gallery of Western Australia, City of Perth, Holmes a Court, Royal Perth Hospital and the City of Wanneroo.
