Turner Galleries presents an exhibition of new watercolours by eminent Australian artist Cherry Hood.
This is her first exhibition in Perth since 2005, when she participated in our Artist in Residence Programme. Hood is well known for her striking anonymous composite portraits, and for winning the Archibald Prize in 2002. Her images are most often of pre-adolescent subjects, often male, who return the viewer's gaze with a certain world weariness that belies their years. Hood's interest in depicting the figure stems from her early studies in gender politics and taboos surrounding depicting the male body.
Her signature style of the runny, watery, dripping watercolour paints, adds an ethereal otherness to these paintings. It emphasizes the serious expressions and the subdued gaze from the young people.
Cherry Hood's distinctive paintings can be found in many major collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, Queensland Art Gallery and the Art Gallery of NSW.
