"One way or another, I make pictures. On this occasion my medium is photography.

I learned to see through the viewfinder of a camera. I’m still looking…

Sometimes I don’t sleep. I take to the streets, late in the night. Seeking wonder. Finding mystery. Belonging. Solitary.

In a technical sense, these photographs are digital. There is no film. No negative. However, the images produced have all the verity of a camera’s truth, despite their slippery hold on objectivity. What lands in the lens, is what was there, somewhere in the gap between what is real and what was seen. These are pictures of glitches, flickers, illusions and shadows. Fugitive moments.

There’s no fancy tricks or software virtuosity involved here. The qualities, quirks and artefacts of digital photography are embraced as distinguishing marks of the process. Within set parameters, chance and the unexpected play their hands. Accidents of bad technique are cultivated and exploited. Camera shake. Delayed shutter. Shooting in the dark, without flash. Without looking. Shooting from the hip, on the run. Anonymously. All part of the plan…

There is a certain aesthetic wonder to be discovered in the by-products of such casual, incidental image capture. Some of these pictures reveal a quietly resonant stillness. Others scream a carnival of uncertainty. None explain themselves entirely.

My most memorable experiences of viewing artwork have always left me with more questions than I brought to the equation. The world around me can be like that too. Ambiguous. It is this sense of wonder that compels me to keep doing what I do…"
