margaret vinciguerra / paintings

Margaret Vinciguerra’s abstract canvases resonate with deep colour. Although some appear almost monochromatic at first glance, there are discrete overall patterns that permeate the surface of the works creating layers of depth. She uses geometric patterning, sometimes combined with line, usually in very subtle colour variations. Margaret’s colour focus for this exhibition has been on fiery warm hues, perfect for winter viewing.

She recently stated,
“when talking about my work it is hard to separate the process of making and the finished work, as both aspects are meditative and equally important. The physical process of making is rhythmic and repetitive, as is the completed work. Colour may be seen as an object of meditation and the repetitive aspects of the work as a mantra. Colour has always been important in my work, sometimes as a response to institutionalised chromophobia, but mostly as a celebration of light in an increasingly dark world.”

Indeed, many of these paintings shimmer with light and colour. Layers of transparent paint, often in different tones of the same hue, create lush rhythmic depths. Yet careful details, such as a veil of dots in a contrasting colour, or floating soft edged geometric shapes in semi-transparent white, pull the viewers eyes back to the picture plane’s surface. This is a smorgasbord for the eyes, delicious deep greens, rich burgundies, charcoal greys and rose pinks. These are artworks that celebrate paint and the process of painting.

This will be Margaret’s fifth solo exhibition and her first at The Church Gallery. She has also been involved in many group shows, including selection for major art prize exhibitions.

Margaret has paintings in several collections, including Artbank, the City of Waneroo, Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Department of Fair Trading, WA School of Art and Design, Woodside Offshore Petroleum, Town of Cambridge and the Premier’s Department of WA. She has studied at the WA School of Art and Design and UWA.
